My son enjoys being at Strong Hearts. He is a beginner and a teen and they offer classes that pertain to him. He really likes the fundamental and teen classes they offer. Everyone there from teachers to other BJJ students are welcoming and supportive in gaining skills and improving the art and sport of BJJ. When you are there you feel like one big family. I highly recommend Strong Hearts.

I started coming here roughly 1 month ago. The environment is great and both the coaches and your fellow students want you to grow and be successful. This is one of the few gyms where the vibes are always good and egos are left at the door. If you have never tried and are interested, or looking for a new gym this is a great spot.

Gi and No Gi Classes | BJJ in Phoenix

We have No Gi classes to help improve your No Gi game. The grips and chokes available are different than Gi.

Caio Terra has won the No Gi Worlds for ten years straight!

There are limitations of the No Gi classes too. There are many chokes the practitioner can get away with, so we do Gi and No Gi to keep your game balanced.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Phoenix | Advanced Class

We have classes specifically for Advanced BJJ practitioners. Only Blue and above are invited unless you get permission from a professor.
This will improve your Jiu-Jitsu rolling against advanced belts!

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu - Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do you have a class for beginners?

We have classes specifically for beginners Mondays and Wednesdays.  This is geared toward learning basics and focuses on technique and drilling.

  • Am I too old for this?

We have had students in their 60s who have rolled with us.  One of our black belts is almost 60 and rolling great.  We'd suggest stretching or Yoga if anything to loosen your muscles up to avoid injury.

  • Can Women do this?

Absolutely! We have had some great female BJJ practitioners.  From a self-defense perspective, there is no better martial art for women than BJJ.  It teaches women how to defend themselves from the ground through chokes, joint submissions, and sweeps.

  • What if I am out of shape?

You are probably out of shape for BJJ, whether you know it or not.  We have had athletes come in and get tired. It happens to everyone.  We've had multiple weight loss success stories, and as you train, your body will change radically.  The best way to get in shape is to roll with us.

  • Do I have to spar?

Yes, for sure, you need to do live rolls in BJJ.  Each class is different, but if you'd like less rolling and more technical instruction/drilling, you can attend the beginner class.  If you want to roll more against high-level BJJ practitioners, go to the Advanced BJJ class.  We have options.  As far as MMA goes, yes, you MUST spar.

  • What do I need for my first day?

Watch our video of what to expect in class.  Ultimately, you should have a mouthpiece and clipped nails, and ensure you hydrate before class.  Most importantly, relax. Our students and professors would be more than happy to help you.  We all started from the bottom.

  • Hygiene rules...

Make sure your finger and toenails are ALWAYS clipped!  No one wants to get cut by nails.  We require the mats to be cleaned after class for hygiene.  Make sure you are clean and properly washed before class.  All of these things will make the experience better.  BTW, please don't ever go into the bathroom with bare feet.  This is the ultimate no-no! :)

  • Is this the same as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu?

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is the original version of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu by the Gracie family.  The martial arts have expanded so much due to the sport's popularity.  So ultimately, most BJJ schools you attend will recognize all the traditional moves. Though you must study all parts of BJJ, not just traditional moves, as  Modern BJJ must be understood to have a complete game
